    GROWING THE TALENT (Skills Link for Youth with Intellectual Disabilities) - Greater Vancouver Area
    Type of Program or Service:
    SKILLS LINK - EMPLOYABILITY THROUGH WORK EXPERIENCE approach – designed for 10 participants who have an intellectual disability, to complete a 24-week program in the Retail, Tourism & Hospitality industries. The classroom will be located in Burnaby, central to bus routes & able to accommodate persons with disabilities.

    During the 24-week program, participants will receive $8.00/hour for the classroom portion & $8.00/hour plus 4% vacation pay for the work experience hours. Participants will be divided into the following hours of participation:
    (a) 18 hrs/week or (b) 24 hrs/week.

    CLASSROOM - Life & Employability Skills: Participants will spend a number of days in class at 6 hours/day at the beginning of the program, then 1 day/week in class for 22 weeks. Topics include: communication, managing conflict, problem solving, time management, budgeting, A Matter of Respect, handling anxiety, nutrition, customer services, safety, career exploration, job search skills and more!

    WORK EXPERIENCE: Participants will work 3-4 days/week for 22 weeks, with an employer from one of the three industry sectors, all of which represent a wide range of work opportunities in a wide variety of businesses from: Adventure Tourism & Recreation, Attractions, Travel, Tourism Services, Events & Conferences, Transportation, Accommodation, Food & Beverage and Retail.

    Eligibility:
    • Must have an intellectual disability (documentation required);
    • Between 15-30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection;
    • Must be out of school & unemployed;
    • Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits;
    • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
